| This new double album by guitarist Greg Chako, his sixth release to date as a leader, shows off his broad range of compositional talents. The mutli-instrumental members of his new Tokyo-based sextet convey his memorable melodies in various horn ensembles along with a wide spectrum of percussive textures. While all the tunes are originals, half take traditional jazz songforms as their point of departure. Whether four-beat swing, latin, ballad or funkier grooves, all are performed with a freshness and sincerity that makes this band exemplary of just how exciting jazz can be in the twenty-first century. |
